Smart People write goals to achieve them, Do you?

by Raj on December 15, 2009

People with Clear, written goals, accomplish far more in a shorter period of time than people without them could ever imagine !! – Brian Tracy

In 1973, the 1953 graduating class from Yale met at a reunion. There were researchers who asked the graduating class – “How many of the former students had achieved written life goals. Five per cent said they had.

The researchers then had each person complete a financial asset work sheet. The results are as follows:

  • 70% of the class had never set goals.
  • 25% had New Years resolution–type goals or goals they could articulate but were not written down.
  • Only 5% had written goals.

The five per cent of the class that had written goals controlled ninety-six per cent of the group’s net worth.

That means:

  • 5% People had 96% of Net worth of the whole group.
  • 95% People had 4% of Net worth of the whole group.

smart people write theie goals

Hmmm, do you think that’s just an example and does not hold true everywhere. Lets look at some eye opening facts regarding the Richest people in the world. I am sure you would agree these people are Smart.

  • 50 million richest people of the world achieve as much as 2.7 billion poor people of the world.” (Milanovic 2002, p.50)
  • The wealth of the world’s 7 richest people combined is more than 567 million poorest people in the world.

Do you think that these rich people have achieved so much just by luck ?? Of course, they work hard and strive their best to achieve what they have.

But there is one important thing which is common in all the greatest achievers of the world.

“THEY WRITE THEIR GOALS”

That is why, they are called Smart. Generally, Ninety-seven per cent of the people do not write Goals. They do not have a clear, written aim of where they’d like to be in six months, five years or ten years. You must be wondering Why is it so?

This is so because most of the people are either unaware that they can achieve a lot in life by writing their Goals. Some are lazy enough not to do it.

The point is – Why does it happen that if we write our Goals, we are able to achieve far more than those who do not write their goals.

Here is your answer – On an average, a human mind goes through 60,000 thoughts in a day. It becomes difficult for us to Focus on one particular thing/task during the day. If we write our Goals, then our mind becomes focused on the thought of achieving the goals that we have written. And since we are more focused on our Goal, we tend to work towards achieving our Goals.

I urge you to take a Diary which you can maintain, and write your Goals right now about whatever you want to achieve in Life. It can be financial, personal, academic, any thing that you wanna achieve.

Written your Goals? What Next?

It is not so that you write your goals today and then just forget about them. Once you have written your Goal, you need to give 5-10 minutes daily by going through your Goal in the morning as well as in the eveniing.

Reading your Goal in the morning: Helps you remain focused on the Goal throughout the day.

Reading your Goal at Night before you Go to Sleep: Helps you introspect and analyze the progress you are making towards your goal.

Still reading the article? Have you written your Goal? Come back after writing your Goal and share with us in the comment that you have written it. Also, if you would like to share your Goal with us or need any help on achieving it, I am there to help.

Do you know someone personally who did write their goals and achieved them?? Or Did you achieve yours by doing the same? Share the success story with us.

Hi,

I dont know what to say but I am pretty skeptic if doing such stuff really matters.

Coz I have not seen much testimonials in which people claim that they had written their goals and then achieved them, I feel its a little hyped stuff these days but dont really get results.

By the way, Really like the cute blonde in the pic

Swat I completely agree with you.

Just to give an example of the great power of writing Goals, I was someone who was not much good in studies till senior secondary school, I failed in Maths during my 11th Class.
In College, I wrote my goal to come first in the college…Imagine, a failure thinking of coming first !!!

And guess what, I got 2 gold medals in my MBA because I topped the college and my stream (Marketing)….

If a failure can become a gold medalist by writing down his goals, so can anyone else….

I have a few goals that need to be completed next year (2010). My goals are split between personal and my blog. Yes, my goals are different and I think I would be able to complete 90% of them.

When I set up my goals for my blog, I create a maximum and a minimum. I need to ensure that I’m in the middle of those goals.

For example, I have set a goal to get comments on my blog:

10,000 (maximum)
7,500 (minimum)

If I get 8,500 then I would still be happy. BUT if I get 10,000 then I would be really happy and excited.

Serradinho,

I felt really great to see that you have written clear and SMART goals for yourself !! I am sure you are gonna achieve them.

Just a small advice – Instead of thinking, that you are gonna achieve 90% of them,.. think that you will achieve 100% of them. This will really make a big difference !! trust me :)

in my opinion, prayers to god are equivalent to writing goals and reviewing them, god has time to listen prayers,do you have time to pray?

Hey Abhinav,

Yes, praying to God is equally important, my next article is on that only…. But I would say – We can not compare apples with oranges. ‘Praying to God’ and ‘writing your Goals’ are different in their own perspective.

When we write our goals, and ask for strength from God in our prayers that we do efforts to achieve our Goals, I am sure, then nothing can stop us from achieving our dreams :)

Raj,

First of all, what an awesome blog theme!

Second, I couldn’t agree more regarding the need, no necessity, to set goals in life and then regularly review my progress.

I also keep a mini-goal worksheet running on my computer and anything that comes up which is important but not immediately urgent, I quickly write it in my mini-goal worksheet and assign it a rough priority. It is really just an ordered list and I place each goal-related thought in at the appropriate place.

Then, as I am continuing to work through the steps to achieve my goal, I scan the mini-goal worksheet to remind me of the “moments of inspiration” that may now need my attention.

Cheers, Geoff

Hey Geoff, Thanks for appreciating my blog theme, It really look a long time until I could customize it the way I wanted :)

The technique u use is good, I use something similar, I would be illustrating it in one of my upcoming posts :)

Raj – I am a HUGE fan of writing down goals – every year I do two exercises.

#1: 101 goals list – I update it with what I accomplished from the previous year’s list as well as update it with things that have changed or new goals I want to achieve

#2: A 101 “Best Year End Questions” list – it is interesting each year as I do this (I’ve been doing it since 2005) to see what is on the list from the year before as well as things I’ve crossed off. These questions are not all goals related – some are: what relationships are better than last year, etc.

My favorite 101 goals thing is when I wrote on 10/12/2005 that I wanted to own a property on the lake. (thinking it would be years and years before I could afford one) and then closing on a lake front property on 10/13/2006. (and I had forgotten that I had put it on my 2005 list).

I always hear it’s important to write goals, but I find it disheartening to see my goals go unfulfilled. I need to try again though setting more realistic goals. Thanks for the boost.
