The Battle starts… with your own mind!

Do you believe that happiness is a choice? You might say “How can I be happy in my current situation?”. Well, it’s not the situation that makes you depressed, but your own decision to be depressed. When you lose your wallet, you can choose to curse all day (cursing the one who may have found it, perhaps?) or to simply feel grateful that no one has used your cards yet and cancel them quickly.

To win the battle on your own mind, these thoughts have to be stopped:

1)    Stop being negative

Stop thinking of the negatives and find the positives of EVERY situation. It may not be easy, but sometimes you have to “force” yourself to think positively, even though things may not turn that way.  If you see a friend throwing away your birthday present to the bin secretly, instead of being angry about it, put this thought instead: “Oops, I guess he/she doesn’t like my present but he/she’s good enough to do it secretly so not to hurt my feelings”. It may sound weird, but if you can maintain this positive attitude, you’ll live happier! You’ll feel positive about other people and more importantly, about yourself!

2)    Stop being analytical

I’m analytical. I love to analyze a given situation and sometimes I have my own thoughts about it. The problem is, the analysis is based on what I know or what I’ve heard or what had happened in the past. Often when I see or hear something, I’ll make an answer/story from my own thoughts. It’s scary and it’s dangerous! It’s even more dangerous if you think that you have always been right so far with your analysis. It means that you are going to create your own story of a given situation (or people) and you’ll always think that it is the truth, even if it is not!

3)    Stop trying to find out the real answer

There are things better not knowing. That is not an excuse for being ignorant, but you need to take a step back if you always want to know other people’s business (what they eat, why they do certain things, etc). Stop listening to other people when they are on the phone! Sometimes it’s better if you don’t know what you shouldn’t know.  Ignorance is a bliss and it is true!

4)    Stop being judgmental

No body’s perfect and that includes you. If you think that other people can be so bad or annoying, so can you! The difference is that their “weaknesses” are not the same as your “weaknesses”. If you think that you are better than the others, think again! You may not do what they do, but you may do what they don’t do!

I used to be very pessimistic about people and myself. I had no confidence in myself and felt that I was a loser and being left alone by my friends. After reading a Christian book titled “Battlefield of the mind” by Joyce Meyer, I really learn that the battle is not in life itself, but it’s on your mind (at least, it starts there).

Have a positive attitude in whatever you do, whatever the result is :)
